Subject: DEMA Legislative Alert and Opinion Poll – Goliath Grouper in Florida
You may be aware that a meeting of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is scheduled for September 10 - 11, 2014 in Kissimmee, Florida, during which the FWC will issue a staff report on the biology, research, and management status of goliath grouper. The staff report will also describe a stakeholder survey conducted by the University of Florida on spear fishers’, hook and line fishers’ and recreational (non-spearing) divers’ attitudes and goals for goliath grouper management in Florida.
The agenda for this meeting can be found here.
Given the continued scientific uncertainty regarding the recovery of goliath grouper populations, DEMA favors the continuation of the current moratorium on harvest of this species, as we have since 2011. However, we do believe it is important to capture the opinions of all diving stakeholders on this issue.
We are asking you to please complete a brief questionnaire regarding the future management of the goliath grouper, by 4:00pm Eastern Time, Tuesday, September 9, 2014. This data will be helpful for assisting the FWC in their constructing their goliath grouper management plans and will be utilized at the FWC meeting.
For those interested in attending, the FWC meeting is open to the public.
Meeting will take place at:
Date: September 10 - 11, 2014.
Place: Embassy Suites Orlando - Lake Buena Vista South,
4955 Kyngs Heath Road, Kissimmee, Florida 34746.
