About You, "The Professional"...
How I was introduced to the professional diving industry:
Back in 1972 I had a club at out local college and we had 150 member and could not get air and equipment, so I saw and grabed the chance to open a dive store.
What I like best about my job:
The best part is teaching the Instructor course and showing the new instructors the ways of the industry. I love seeing how happy they are once they earn the PADI Instructor rating. And I hope they can have as great of a life as diving has given me.
Words of wisdom for those starting their career in the diving industry:
Never say your thebest our number on, let your customers do that. Walk slow and plan all your moves. look over your business plan every year and stay on the path. one day you will be at the top.
Best way to keep a competitive edge:
Know what the other stores are doing but ask your customers what it is you can do for them. Like what kind of trips should we do next year? What classes are you looking to take? And so on. NEVER worry about money, the customers you want have the money and will spend it if they see the value.
Biggest change I have seen in the professional diving industry since I started:
Less use of tables and more use of computers. The down side to many people are getting away from a proper dive plan and that may not be safe. Yes a computer shows us what we did, but we need to still plan the dive. I also love the dry suits and the ease of using them.
Ralph Erickson, a friend and true mentor, I learned everything about teaching and even improved my diving skills. He was a true educator.
About You, "The Person"...
