About You, "The Professional"...
How I was introduced to the professional diving industry:
I am one of the many SCUBA divers that was introduced to the sport by the TV series SEA HUNT. I have been involved in the diving industry for over 40 years. My passion for SCUBA has been fed through a diverse array of experiences in the trade. The highlights of my career span from Navy Seal in Viet-Nam to Commercial Diver in New Orleans and Africa; from dive store owner in Texas and Belize to dive equipment Sales Representative for Dacor and then Mares in Mexico and the Caribbean; to designer of the Conquistador BCD by Aquatic Performance, Cozumel Scuba Repair's scuba diving line for the everyday use and demands of the rental market.
What I like best about my job:
I love the challenge of the sale; of fulfilling a customer's needs and solving their problems.
Words of wisdom for those starting their career in the diving industry:
Obtain as much knowledge as you can, about all aspects of the industry, especially the area you are about to embark on.
Best way to keep a competitive edge:
Stand behind your product whether the manufacturer does or not.
Biggest change I have seen in the professional diving industry since I started:
In my opinion, the biggest change I have seen since I started is in retail sales. While there is a wider variety of product, quality has declined.
John Hvasta Sr., star sales representative from Dacor.
