About You and Shark Research Institute...

My name:
Marie Levine

My job function in the company:
Executive Director

Years in business:
21 years

About Shark Research Institute:
We are a multidisciplinary, international NGO that sponsors and conducts research on sharks and advocates for protection for sharks (and all marine species) at regional, national and international forums.

Business mission/values:
Create value for sharks as living natural resources for dive ecotourism, particularly in developing countries. By so doing revenue streams are created for local fishers that might otherwise slaughter the sharks for immediate gain.

About You, "The Professional"...

How I was introduced to the professional diving industry:
At the age of 6, I decided I wanted to be pearl diver - I had seen a display in a museum of a coral reef and thought it was the only profession that would enable me to go to such a wonderful place. I started freediving every opportunity, then was certified in 1969.

What I like best about my job:
I spend time underwater and meet fish, dolphins jellies, and other wonderful creatures. I've logged many thousands of dives yet every dive has been different.

Words of wisdom for those starting their career in the diving industry:
Do it because you love it and would rather be doing it than anything else. When you have a job that you'd do -- even if you aren't paid for it -- you've got the right job.

Best way to keep a competitive edge:
Never stop learning.

Biggest change I have seen in the professional diving industry since I started:
Too much dependency on technology and not enough emphasis on basic survival skills.

Many: Dr. Sylvia Earle, Valerie Taylor

About You, "The Person"...

Something you'd find on my bucket list:
Diving more places way way way off the beaten track...those places where the 'dive boat' is often a dugout canoe.

What I am most proud of:
The researchers and staff of the Shark Research Institute. They are -- every one of them -- amazing and dedicated individuals.

Favorite quote:
Evil prevails only when good people are silent.

Something people would be surprised to learn about me:
I don't trust horses - they have big teeth, big feet & to climb on their backs and kick them in the ribs seems nuts. I wouldn't do that to a shark.

Five wishes for the future:
1. Ban longlining worldwide, 2. Prohibit purse seines worldwide, 3. End shark finning worldwide. 4. Stop overfishing, worldwide. 5. Stop using the ocean as a garbage dump.
